About Sokar

There is relatively little historical information available about Sokar. As far as I know, no one has written an entire book about Him; the most I can find are sentences, passing references, and the occasional full paragraph. This page is a collection of what I’ve been able to find, as well as my impressions via my own spiritual work.

Historical information

  • His primary cult center was in Memphis.
  • He is a god of death and agriculture.
  • He is the patron of tomb builders and makers of ritual objects.
  • He takes the form of a hawk or falcon, or a hawk-headed mummy.
  • In the underworld, He inhabits the region of Rosetau, which is a barren desert. When Ra passes through this region during the night, Sokar restrains apep in a cave.
  • He is associated with snakes; the solar barque turns into a snake to cross his part of the underworld.
  • He has a female form and/or counterpart, Sokaret.
  • From the Middle Kingdom on, he was synchretized with Ptah and Osiris.

Personal interpretations

  • Given the combination of agriculture and artisanship, He also governs artistic fertility.
  • I suspect He has some association with oases.
  • He seems to like offerings of fruit.
  • Although He is a death/fertility god, He is not the same as Osiris, thankyouverymuch.
  • For some reason, all of my own depictions of Him in hawk form have a crest. I have no idea why. Maybe He just likes the ‘do.
